Full-sun and semi-shaded farming are the most prevalent ways to grow coffee in Puerto Rico. Our approach is to support the adoption of smart farming practices across the island.
Smart Farming is the use of modern alternative energy, new technologies, data and automation to make farming more efficient, productive, precise, and sustainable.
Sensors and IoT devices: Measure soil moisture, nutrient levels, temperature, humidity, crop health, livestock vital signs, etc.
GPS, drones, and satellites: Maps fields precisely, monitor crop growth from above, detect stress or disease early, and guide machinery.
Data analytics, AI, and machine learning process the collected data to predict yields, recommend actions, detect problems, or automate decisions.
Self-driving tractors, robotic harvesters, variable-rate sprayers/irrigators that adjust application rates on the go.
Dashboards that integrate data from multiple sources for planning, monitoring, and decision support.
Cellular, satellite, or local networks that link sensors, machines, and cloud platforms.
Higher productivity and better crop/livestock quality.
Reduced use of water, fertilizers, pesticides, and fuel → lower costs and less environmental impact (runoff, emissions, etc.).
Earlier problem detection and more informed decisions
Better traceability and record-keeping.
Labor savings through automation.
From large commercial operations to smaller farms adopting individual tools, adoption will continue to grow as sensors, connectivity, and AI become more affordable and accessible.
We either fight the inevitable or adopt to compete and thrive. Puerto Rico Coffee Company has adapted and is prepared to lead.
